Q: What Makes Gen 2 Cue Different Than The 1st Generation Playing Cue?
Since day 1 our goal has been to manufacture and deliver the single best value in the world of pool cues. Our 1st Generation cue has been widely loved and incredibly well reviewed. That said, we are deeply committed to improving all of our products in any and every way possible.
When our customers were asked if there was “anything” they would change or improve.
The number one response we received was: When hitting heavy english shots, with tip placement well outside center cue, the cue hit seemed louder than on other shots. Some described it as a “tonk” or “hollow” noise. While this is often associated with carbon fiber shafts, and does not affect playability, we chose to address the issue.
After identifying the cause, we made a small adjustment to our internal shaft construction. The result is a quieter hit and slightly damper, more responsive, more “woodlike” feel.
Our Beta Testers - who were all playing with the Gen 1 as their primary cue, all reported an improved, more consistent hit experience across the full range of shot types. They felt that the consistency in feel translated into more consistent outcomes in position play.
The second response that was received less often was: Despite our Gen 1 cues using a popular 3/8x10 joint the length of our butt’s pin being slightly shorter than some cues which results in a slightly shallower female thread in our shafts.
Players reported that our shafts would not fully accept the 3/8x10 pins on other butts leaving a very small gap between butt and shaft that they did not want to force closed.
For this reason the pin on our Gen 2 butts has been lengthened slightly and the shaft’s female thread has been drilled slightly deeper.
In conclusion, those are the two changes made resulting in our Gen 2 Cue.
Note: Our Gen 2 Shafts are fully compatible with our Gen 1 Butts.
So if you own a Gen 1 Cue and are interested in trying the new Gen 2 Shaft please see the following question.
Q: What If I Bought A 1st Generation Cue, Can I Upgrade To A Gen 2 Shaft?
The short answer is YES you will be able to upgrade by purchasing just a shaft. However we are only offering full cues in this Gen 2 Pre-Sale Bundle Promotion. A separate production run of Gen 2 Shafts is underway. It is scheduled to be finished by the end of the year. Once official availability and shipping date for these shafts have been confirmed, Gen 1 Cue Owners will be given an opportunity to reserve a Gen 2 Shaft at a special discounted price.
Q: What Is A “Hybrid Taper” Shaft?
Our Hybrid Tapered shaft is designed to balance the benefits of a “Conical Tapered” shaft which consistently rises in diameter from tip to joint, and a “Pro Tapered” shaft which maintains a consistent diameter for roughly 12-14 inches at the end of the shaft.
Our Hybrid, or Modified Conical Taper increases strength, maximizes power transfer and reduces deflection while still providing a less noticeable low rise feel as it passes through your bridge fingers.
Q: Should I Choose a 12.5mm or 11.8mm Shaft?
Ultimately this is a personal preference. Typically the more narrow the shaft the more English players can achieve. Often without moving the tip as far off center as may be necessary with a thicker shaft. This can be to the advantage of an advanced player with a very consistent stroke, but can work to the disadvantage of the typical amateur player with minor stroke flaws. Our shaft diameter offerings are in the mid to narrow range of the markets’ typical offerings. So if you are fully undecided we recommend a 12.5mm shaft for low to moderately advanced players. It will prove more forgiving. However if you are used to playing with a pro tapered shaft that is in between 11.8 and 12.5 we recommend choosing the 11.8 due to the low rise of our Hybrid Taper.
